Free Route Airspace (FRA)

The Borealis Alliance is a pioneer in the implementation of a complete, truly cross-border, free route airspace (FRA) amongst the airspace managed by its nine members.

The Borealis Alliance Free Route Airspace (FRA) programme will enable airline and business aviation customers to plan and take the most cost effective, fuel efficient and timely routes across the entire airspace managed by Borealis members saving time, money and fuel.

Using data from the Eurocontrol Network Manager and the SESAR Deployment Manager between 2018 and 2020, the deployment of Free Route Airspace over Norway, Finland, Estonia, Latvia Sweden and Denmark has saved over 151,281 tonnes of CO2 corresponding to a saving in 800,000 Nautical Miles based on real flights.

It is a major step forward in delivering the European Commission’s vision of a Single European Sky and Borealis Alliance members are working with their National Supervisory Authorities and EASA to encourage greater regulatory cooperation in order to ensure Free Route Airspace in Northern Europe is safely introduced as quickly and as efficiently as possible.
