The Borealis Alliance is a leading Alliance of Air Navigation Service Providers (ANSPs) that enables its members to drive better performance for stakeholders through business collaboration. The board of the alliance met for a board meeting in Stockholm, Sweden at the end of May.

- The members of the Borealis Alliance committed to work together to help improve the way airspace is managed for the benefit of airline and business aviation customers. We are at the final stages of the Free Route Airspace implementation and are constantly striving to identify joint initiatives delivered across the whole area which make a positive contribution to the operational and financial performance of our members and reduce environmental impact, says Reynir Sigurdsson, Borealis Alliance Executive Director.

The Borealis Alliance Free Route Airspace programme has enabled airline and business aviation customers to plan and take the most cost effective, fuel efficient and timely routes across the entire airspace managed by Borealis Alliance members saving time, money and fuel.

- The Free Route Airspace programme is one of the alliance's greatest achievements. The programme is ongoing developing the final deliveries, says, Ivar Värk, Chairman of the board of Borealis Alliance and CEO of Estonian Air Navigation Services.

Besides safety and efficiency, the next major contribution is to provide optimal traffic flow based on the total climate effect. The CONCERTO SESAR3 JU Industrial Research project aims to develop and validate a concept of operations to see if it will further improve the Alliance's environmental performance by combining CO2 and non-CO2 metrics. The project started in Q3 2023 and will last until end of Q2 2026.

- The Alliance aims to prepare the introduction of air traffic flows climate impact mitigation means. These effects, composed of both CO2 and non-CO2 emissions, if managed daily, can constitute a new set of temporal and geographical constraints to integrate at flow management and flight planning levels, continues Ivar Värk.

The Board has identified that updates to the requirements for training and licensing is needed and has defined it as a new priority for the Alliance.

- This year, our ambition is to define the Alliance Training and licensing vision and plans to implement them. We aim to work towards better training options where there is a common ground for the Alliance members to share resources. We also aim to promote our vision on how to conduct training to make it more cost-efficient and less time-consuming, concludes Ivar Värk.

The next Alliance Board Meeting will take place in Copenhagen in October.
