On January 3, 2019, Isavia‘s Air Navigation Services implemented the fourth of seven steps in the Borealis Alliance Free Route Airspace (FRA) Programme, completing Isavia‘s FRA project. 

The Borealis Alliance is pleased to announce the appointment of Mr Ásgeir Pálsson, Director of Air Navigation Services at the Icelandic Air Navigation Service Provider (ANSP), Isavia, as its new Chair of the Board.

The Borealis Alliance, the leading alliance of nine North European Air Navigation Service Providers, has appointed Gwen Morgan as its new Executive Director. 

The Borealis Alliance, the leading voluntary collaboration of Air Navigation Service Providers (ANSPs), is one step closer to offering full Free Route Airspace (FRA) across the airspace managed by its nine Members, after new successful implementations by the Irish and Icelandic ANSPs.

The Borealis Alliance has announced a new Chair and Vice-Chair of its Board. Martin Rolfe, CEO of UK Air Navigation Service Provider (ANSP) NATS, takes over from Olle Sundin, Director General of Swedish ANSP LFV, who has stepped down following his retirement from LFV. Ásgeir Pálsson, Director of Air Navigation Services at Icelandic ANSP Isavia has taken up the position of Vice-Chair, which was previously held by Martin Rolfe.

Last Thursday, on May 25th, the North European Free Route Airspace Programme, NEFRA celebrated its successful completion. The Programme launched in 2013 by six North European states pledged establishment of seamless cross border Free Route operations between Danish/Swedish and North European functional airspace blocks (FABs). 

Free Route Airspace is steadily expanding. Now, aircraft operators can fly their preferred trajectories within the Bodø Oceanic FIR, where the Norwegian Air Navigation Services Provider Avinor is responsible for the air traffic management. This is yet another step in implementing FRA across large volumes of airspace.

Avinor Flysikring AS, the Norwegian ANS provider has successfully upgraded its ATM system. The massive enhancement was accomplished on the Sunday night of January 29, and marks an important milestone towards seamless Free Route operations in the Northern Europe. 

The Borealis Alliance, a business-driven Alliance of Air Navigation Service Providers in Europe, has announced the appointment of its new Policy and Regulatory Director, Mr Reynir Sigurðsson.

On the 29th of November, the European Commission (EC) and Innovation and Networks Executive Agency (INEA) visited a Borealis Free Route Airspace implementing partner Finavia at Helsinki Airport in Finland, to see how the EU funding has supported the deployment of Free Route Airspace in Northern Europe.
